Welcome!

Welcome to the Book Designers Resource blog. This blog serves one purpose and one purpose only; to share information about the art of designing books. As my friend and fellow designer pointed out recently, every book, every printed, bound object ever created by man in all history has had a designer's hand in it. Book design in is one of the oldest art forms in modern history and unfortunately, in the dawn of the digital revolution, some of the art of design has been lost to the prefab templates and user friendly design software that all but designs the book(s) for the end-user. In effect, almost anyone can purchase the software and within a few minutes, can come up with something that holds the appearance of a book.

In my experience though, what is lacking from all this easy-to-use software, is a basic understanding of mechanics, aesthetics, typography and how process effects the end product. Decisions made abruptly in the beginning of a design often lead to books that may overtly appear fine, but are not nearly as good as they could be had the designer taken the time to give full consideration to all aspects of the design.

I plan on getting into all aspects of book design - cover to cover, text layout, typography, file set up, content, copyright page considerations, illustrator's considerations, bindery choices, etc. Since this is intended to be a resource, I welcome comments, suggestions and open discussions from anyone who cares to contribute. If someone finds an error in any of my posts, please let me know. All constructive feed back will be posted.

Kind regards-
Vered
